I knew Alan from before kindergarten when our parents took us to the Meadowdale Presbyterian Church while it was still meeting at Fairview Grade School. I remember when Alan had rheumatic fever while we were in junior high school. Danny Davis and I would visit him on the way home from school. I remember being shocked to hear about his death my first semester in college in 1970 and sending his mom, Norma, my first adult sympathy card.
